I've seen a lot of threads on tires, but apologize if there has been something similar or recent on this.
I have a red,1967 big block and need new tires and wheels. I'm going to buy new bolt on's and want good redlines to go with them. Based on prior posts, I won't get Cockers. It seems as though BF Goodrich and Michelin's are the way to go.
When I Google "BF Goodrich Diamondback redline tires", Cocker Tire comes up in conjunction with most of the ads/sites.
When I Google the same thing, but with Michelin, noting really comes up except dbtires.com and fritzstire.com (they appear to be the same company). The tire is the Michelin Diamondback MX / Michelin Defender. Instead of $120 or so for a non-redline tire, they are $264 on these two sites for the redline. You lose the Michelin warranty in favor of dbtires/fritzstire's warranty (not sure if that's good or bad).
The main question is: Is this the only source for these redlines or are there other sources?
Consider this. You spend $1000-$1300 not including misc, for the "right look" that you like. If you hardly drive your car, maybe 500-1000 miles a year. When the tires are considered unsafe at 6-8 years of age, you may have between 6-8K miles. Time for another set of tires! Dennis
There may be another source, but it appears most of the redlines bought here are Diamondback Michelin Defender Radial Tires.
I paid about $1100 one year ago. The tires come smooth with no lettering.
I have those too--longer than a year ago but same price. Nothing bad to say about them and at the time the tires were relatively "fresh" (4 months old based on the date stamps on the inner side walls, which is important to me because there's little question that I will never wear them out but will have replace them for age). I thought I had read somewhere Diamond Back no longer had the Michelins in the size needed--so you may want to ask how old the tires are before buying.
Thanks for everyone's help. I just bought the Diamond Back MX / Michelin Defender redline's (215/70R/15) from Diamond Back Classic Tires (DBtires.com) and Bob (the owner) helped me out. He was super nice and said that size is the perfect fit for the 15X6 bolt on wheels and that 90% of the people that call in get those exact tires. I forgot to ask about the tire manufacturer date so I called back and ended up talking to someone else. They said that they should have been made in the last 6-8 months, but didn't have an exact date.
