Picked up this M-21, a freebie, sound as if it's full of loose change. Can someone identify by the VIN what it's out of? Thanks.
BTW, it's not for sale.
It's a 1970 M21 (close ratio), built Feb 24, 1970.
The P0B24B translates to:
P=Muncie
0=1970
B=Feb
24=day of month
B=M21.
The VIN, 10S405926:
1=Chevrolet
0=1970
S=St. Louis plant
405926=Production sequence of the car it came out of.
For 1970, Corvette VIN numbers began with 400001 and ended with 417316, so it would have been about 1/3 of the way through 1970 Corvette production.

Ok, thanks. I was confused because it looked like the VIN started with....70Sxxxx.
Nope. ONLY the 1970 M22 (in Chevelles) and ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL (NO MATTER which version) 71-74 Muncies had the 26spline input and larger 32spline tail shaft.

Paul Cangialosi at 5 speeds.com says different. 1970 muncies, not just M22 had fine splines.. it's right there on his website.
Look I know your right 99.9% of the time and I respect what you say, but this time your wrong.
Muncies even exist with 661 cases with 1969 build dates.
But a man who built his life around manual transmissions has to have some knowledge, yes??
1970 was the changeover year. As the fine spline was introduced, as we know, GM used what was available. Very possible your 70 was one of the last course spline inputs put into it. M22 was somewhat rare anyway.
I rebuilt the dec build date 1970 m21 out of my friends dads chevelle (documented original owner and one of the last 396 cars built) and it had a fine spline input.
Guess what.. 661 case with a P9T build date. I've heard that's impossible too..
Anything is possible, but in the case stated above with your feb built 1970, it should be a fine spline. Again, used what was available.
I'm not trying to argue, I keep my mouth shut if I don't know anything, but with Muncies I've rebuilt a hundred of them and that's worth something.
DZ knows his stuff, I hate saying otherwise against him, (feels weird too) but it is what it is.
