oving shifter to the right

oving shifter to the right
is it possible to adjust the shifter to move it 1 inch to the right in a 68? The shifter touches the left side forward console edge on first and 2nd. Going into reverse actually pushes the entire console out and I may have already broken my forward console.

I think you intended to post in the C3 section. The C2 console is entirely different than what you are dealing with. Also tell them if it's a stock Muncie shifter or an aftermarket Hurst. In either case moving it an inch is a lot - especially to the right since it bolts up tight to the transmission on the left side.

on a 68 the factory shifter bolts to a bracket which attaches to the frame cross member.
there maybe some play in the bracket but 1" is a lot to expect.
place the car on a lift to see why it is so far off from where it should be.

I know Hurst makes offset shift levers for some cars that accomplish that. Even more than an inch if you want......

I know this is the wrong section for this one but I'm not sure how the shifter can be that far off. These are pics of my old 68.

Thank you all for the replies and photos! Sorry, I did mistakenly put this in C2.
-- Bradc6 - beautiful car! --
It is the stock Muncie shifter.
I am not sure how it can be that far off either. But, everything else with the center console (Gauge cluster, Forward console, eBrake housing) line up perfectly with the factory bolts/holes.
In regards to moving the shifter 1 inch to the right, it really just needs to be the shift lever that is over an inch.

Time to crawl underneath and look at things closely. Could still be a Hurst with an reproduction Muncie stick mounted on it. If a Muncie and bolted to the crossmember mount maybe it has been Bubba'd somehow. I have never used the crossmember mount but maybe there is enough slop in the mounting holes that it can be rotated and tilted left and right - wouldn't take much movement down at the mount to move the ball over at the top an inch or even more.

68 shifter
I have had my 68 for 45 years and have put a few clutches in the car. I can't see how the stock shifter could hit the console. Take a look at your AIM and see if you have all of the parts to mount the shifter and bracket to the cross member and transmission. I think in the middle of the 66 production year, GM added the brackets to isolate the shifter from the transmission to cut down on vibration and buzzing. I would check the two bolts that connect the shifter to the bracket. Sometimes the bottom bolt can work itself loose and cause problems. The AIM will show how the linkage is setup. Good luck. Jerry

Thank you everyone for the replies. it is appreciated.
Well, I did crawl underneath for a good look. The shifter is mounted to a bracket that is attached to the crossmember. The bracket is about an inch to left of the transmission. Had the shifter been mounted to the transmission directly, the left/ right orientation would be great. However, I think the front / rear position would have been too far toward the front. I tried to get some photos, but it is pretty snug under there.
I see that I can loosen the 4 bolts that hold the bracket and possibly adjust the positioning of the bracket, but I do not know how much room there truly is. The bolts that hold the shifter to the bracket are almost touching the transmission already.

Well, I was able to get the shifter over to the right far enough by sliding the shifter bracket to the right as far as it would go and then putting a spacer on the left front. The shifter is really close, but it does not hit the console or plate when I put it in reverse.
Thank you all for the input and help.

All, Thanks for all the insight and help.
I was able to get everything adjusted so the shifter is positioned without interfering with the center console. Ended up just adjusting the mounting of the shifter bracket from beneath the car. It was tight quarters but I only needed a small adjustment to make it work.

Started to build the offset shifter like metal head did. This is what I have so far. Looks like in neutral I will have the shifter nub right in the middle of the shifter boot. Is that about right? I am going to build an adjustable plate just in case.
I do need to disassemble the shifter nub/stick to pull the dust boot on from underneath. Are those spring clips holding a pin in?
