I just picked up a set. I don't know if I got a good deal ($450), but I wanted this style rim for a while now. The inside of the rim has the American Racing script, and also says "Torque Thrust D". The outer edges are polished aluminum, and it looks like the center is darker, but it doesnt look like paint. I see I can get current production for about the same price. I thought that perhaps if these are "originals" they might be more valuable, like real knock offs vs repros.
A couple questions:
Are the originals from the 60s/70s worth any more or any better than the current offering?
Not real happy with the center caps it came with, they stick out past the wheel line. Any recommendations there?
My old rims were 7 inch and these are 6. With the same size rubber (215/60), I feel like I am sitting a hair taller when I drive, and the wheels don't look quite as chunky. I have a big block with manual steering so maybe I am better off?

The originals were used in SCCA racing back in the day. Original TORQUE THRUST fit early non disc brake cars. The ''D'' model came out in 1965.
The 6 inch width was the same as factory knock off's. Seven inch tires of the day, broke C-2 Fender lips.
AMERICAN also had a 3 ear spinner hub cap similar to factory knock off in appearance.
I think there is nothing like an original Torque Thrust D. The newer versions are different if you look close, not a Chineese repo, but I like original.

You got the deal of the century !!! Original TT D wheels sell for far more than what you paid and the originals are superior to the current offerings. They look great on your car. Keep 'em on there.

I want to switch the rubber on them since the tires they came with have an (01) for the date code.
Think it would be safe to use a pressure washer on them? They don't appear to be painted.
I think you were ripped off. I paid $100 for a set of 4 ..............in 1970........
My current TTD's date from 2000, and I paid $99 each at that time, but they do not fit C2 disc brakes (hit the calipers). From what I have been told, AR has since fixed that error.........
And yes, I added spinners.

My understanding is "originals " didn't fit disc brake cars. There fore everything later are just D styles. They come up for sale often used. Most want 150 per wheel but current production puts them on the street for 110 each. Few are that wheel educated to know a twenty year old rim from a current example. Stand back, admire a classic design, and don't be concerned about a five hundred dollar set of wheels. Most of us have several design rims mounted for different purposes. Old Crager SS are my current favorites.
You are way ahead of the curve, price wise...AND you have good taste
Here's my original Torque Thrust D's:

Thanks for the photo Jim, that's exactly what mine look like
I am glad to hear the reports it was a good deal, since I was a little hesitant to pay the cost of new, for something used.
They came with 215/60/R15, same size I was running, but the date code looks real old. Think 225 might work? What size sneakers do you have?
I was thinking I would have the old rubber removed, and take the opportunity to clean em up real good.
Can they withstand the acid type cleaner? Would you recommend?
What about pressure washer?
