First and foremost and always in these issues is to confirm its REALLY running warm...the temp sending units are notorious for reading high. An I/R temp gun aimed at the thermostat housing on the hot car will do the job to validate the gauge reading.

If it's not loosing any coolant, in addition to what Frank suggested make sure the COLD coolant level is halfway (maybe 3/4) in the expansion tank. If it gets to high the cap will allow some to overflow out. Make sure the radiator cap is good and relieves at 15 lbs. The reproduction caps are not really good, look for a older AC made in USA RC-26 cap.

Where is the initial timing set and is the vacuum advance working properly.

Default Test

The thermostat housing is what I use to check the temp. I also do the top and bottom hoses for a differential reference. Hot going in cool going out. My temp sender is off by about ten degrees.

And, hold the IR gun no further than 6" from the area you are wanting to read...much more accurate
