Louie... unless you're TRON (dated reference!), you can't experience anything digital -- it still has to end up analog for us to interact with it.

Much like auto maintenance, computer programming is a combination of grunt work and creativity, with the more interesting projects having more of the latter!

I know the type, the only piece of equipment they can operate is an iphone.

While enjoying time at the beach this summer, I have witnessed people, and this does include adult men, with little to no ability to stick/secure a beach umbrella in the sand. Dennis

My twin daughters are both out of the household and married, but they learned the importance of oil changes and a few other things along the way. They tell me they still watch the tech at the oil change place and remind him not to strip the drain plug. They have both changed out and jump started batteries. I also, made them change a tire when they were 16. Just in case. And dad is only a cell call away!

And there we have today's world, folks! A college professor who does not know the difference between "could care less" and 'could NOT care less". I'd say that's the gramatical equivalent of not knowing what a 9/16" open-end wrench is.

Its in common use - like the non-existent word "irregardless"... A colloquialism...doesn't make anybody stupid or uneducated.

I used to park my 66 Mustang Fastback in my reserved parking spot at the Securities & Exchange Commission along with the other Federal execs. It sat in between the BMWs, Jaguars and Mercedes. It was strongly hinted to me that driving an old muscle car might be the best idea for my 'image'...

True, but common use does not always align with erudite or even educated.

Not to be excessively pedantic, but if possible, one should always eschew obfuscation.

For all intensive purposes, anyways.

Sorta like the original commentator's use of the coordinating conjunction "and" to start a sentence in post #25 above. Bad grammatical form but accepted as a stylistic convention... An erudite person criticizing a professor's use of a widely-accepted colloquialism should know that

Everybody on here has their own idioms they use frequently so I don't know why stones are being thrown. "Ain't nobody got time for dat!"

This thread has just gone sideways...

I have two better than that...

My brilliant 19yo college junior was building same kind of wing for a school project and was looking it on the web and having trouble getting the cardboard to comply. My wife said "ask dad!" He said "This is science mom." I have been a jet mechanic for 32 years?!?

Next, I was passing by his room when I notice he was watching a video on how a impact gun works... I said come out to the garage and you can actually use one.
He declined it was hot and dirty outside. - My shop is carpeted and has a/c...

Thank goodness he got a 35 on his act, and his major computer science and engineering.
He has a photographic memory and I will go far and do great things as long as he doesn't have to get dirty and sweat.

He set up the high school internet and servers network plus is apple repair certified. He really is scary smart, but that is our future.

I am remodeling a house I bought with my son. He is trying, but I am afraid when he swings the hammer that we might be heading to the E.R.

He is a great kid though... physics major...can explain all kinds of stuff to me that I have no idea what he is talking about... maybe his interest is in flying kites or light bulbs because he talks about the theory of strings and dark matters..

Well don't let it happen again - look at all the ruckus you caused! THAT'S why grammar is important, misuse generates friction and debate between those who will and who will not tolerate it. And as someone said above, ain't NOBODY got time for THAT sheeit!

It's a toss up on which was funner to read. The original post or Easy's and Frankie's exchange which biggly expanded my vocabulary.

But, of course, you meant "for all intents and purposes" if we're going to get real technical here...but I like the rest of it

Hard to roll around under a car on a creeper with a Man-Bun.

"could care less" is ineffective....it means you can care less. "couldn't care less" is far more effective. But nobody under 50 says it anymore. "Irregardless" is not a word, but is used all the time. I'm no Frankie (my later model brain has some quality shortcuts compared to his Eisenhower era equipment), but a real, real pet peeve of mine is Uptalk. Usually women, usually 45 or under. Everything they say is a question. ''I'm like, going to the store? And driving my car?'', etc. etc. Even news anchors are doing it now...it makes them sound like they don't know what they're talking about.

Two nights ago on our local TV news, a reporter said "I axed that question....."
