Good morning. I have a 1967 vette that was built 1/18/67. Would that be considered an early built date? Also does DOT 5 brake fluid eat the seals in the calipers and do you recommend using it? Thanks for your time on this. John

A Jan. built 67 would be right in the middle of early late builds. They started building in Aug. & stopped in late July. No the DOT 5 will not eat the seals.
early and late depends on the part your talking about. Not the cars build date
This is how many folks interpret the early/late question, and it is probably the correct way.
Having said that, I would also say (in general) that an August-September car is "early" and a July-August car is "late". This is where parts from a previous year (early) could be installed or parts from the new model year (late) could be installed due to current model year parts not being available. FWIW.
If you use DOT 5 fluid, buy it from a major, "name-brand" source. Not from anybody. I believe Wilwood sells it, also Muskegon Brake, and Stainless Steel Brakes. I buy from the latter source, and the last time I went thru Corvette Central who stocked it. Be aware, some brake companies will not honor warranty claims if DOT 5 is used. However, a number of us have successfully used it for over 20-25 years.

We have stopped selling and so have many other vendors due to the change in formulation brought on by the EPA approximately 1.5 years ago. They forced the manufacturers of the Silicone fluid to change their formula and the result is that the fluid is causing seals to swell and leak. There have been a lot of people using it and unfortunately with the government there isn't a fast fix. That's why the warranty is being voided if silicone is used. It isn't where you get it, it's a government standard now. Hopefully they can get it situated so we can all enjoy the benefits of DOT5 again soon.

Larry, I had several calipers all of a sudden start leaking. It has J 56 brakes on the front so those will have to be rebuilt. I think I will change the fluid to DOT 3. What brand do you guys recommend. John

Any major brand of DOT 3 should be fine. Prestone, Castrol, etc. The BEST one used by the racers is available from Ford. Richard Newton (RIP) mentioned it in his article on this forum regarding brakes a few years back. I used it long before that, and got the part number from the NASCAR racers. A Goggle search should also find the part number.
What brand DOT 5 were you using??
Since my current supply of DOT 5 is from SSBC from 20 years ago, I am probably safe for now, but one day I will need to restock. Oh well........
