Default 62 solid lifters

My 62 327/340hp engine is undergoing its second rebuild. First was at 60k+ miles back in late 60s. An engine rebuilder installed Crowler solid lifters with a Duntov 30-30 cam. Now after another 60k+ miles, the engine was disassembled due to leaking head gasket to find that about 8 of the 16 Crowler lifters had come apart internally. Only thing holding the lifter guts in was push rods. The photo with two lifers are the Crowlers, one with the keeper coming out and the other showing the internal part that dropped out after extracting from engine block. Can't say what effect, if any, the lifters coming apart had on the valve train but I had never seen or heard of any solid lifters coming apart.

The other photo shows one original GM lifter that was factory installed in the engine back in 1962. All 16 of the lifers appear to be in good shape with no apparent internal problems.

Have others experienced this problem with Crowler or other after-market brand solid lifters. Will be in need of replacement lifters to go with an NOS 097 cam in the rebuild, so since over-the-counter GM solids are long gone, any suggestions on replacement lifters?

Also, any thoughts on the Crowler lifter problem?

Thanks, Larry

The original GM solid lifters didn't have a snap ring keeper to hold the seat in just like your picture shows.

Way back in 1962, I pulled a push rod out of my engine and the pushrod seat came with it. Being young and dumb, I replaced the lifter with a new one as I thought it was defective. The new lifter rounded the love off in 5 minutes of run time.

If you want new lifters, I'd use the Sealed Power lifters available everywhere. I think the number is 992?

The damaged lifter looks like a Crowerhydraulic flat tappet which are still being made apparently. I would think the folks at Crower would like see that. Anyway, I agree with Mike M. I think you are on the right track by going back to the 097 cam with original style lifters. Do the pushrods, too.

Thanks Mike and Tomy62 for your comments/recommendations.

Apologies may be due Crower, not Crowler, but after 60k miles, they probably think the lifters were just worn out, not defective.

Original push rods look fine but I guess a new set is due after 120k total miles.

I used to drag race in a stock class that required "factory style" parts for the most part. one thing we learned not to scrimp on was valve train! buy the good manley stainless valves and matched springs and retainers to your cam no matter how big it is.. as for lifters, comp cams makes a solid lifter with a EDM hole in the face. it is on the pressure side so it will constantly feed a fine film to the cam lobe and lifter face to help stop ware. we went as far as cryo treating the cam and lifters and all valve train..and this also helped a unbelievable amount. we spun these motors 8000 rpm between shifts with these pieces, with no ware at tare downs..over kill? yes, some of it is for your application. but for sure use the valves and the lifters ...JMHO enjoy troy

I once "punched a hole" in a stock GM lifter on 70 LT-1 Engine. Just pushed through and broke the seat, but the pushrod stayed in so there was no real damage,
