In the mid 70s I worked for an exotic car dealer in the DC area that is now Motorcar Gallery of Ft Lauderdale. We always had 250 Lusso's for $7500, 250 SWB's were in the 20s and Daytona coupes were about $10,000. We always had 25-30 Ferrari's in stock.

At those prices, you're not buying a car. You are buying a piece of art, like a Monet or Picasso. Which unfortunately means they become undriven garage art. Too bad, as my dad had a blast street racing his 365 GTB/4 Daytona against the likes of Hemi Cudas, 350 Chevy IIs, and Boss 302s. Not too good off the line, but he alway blew by them from 60 mph up to 175.

Honestly I don't get it. Some Ferraris are beautiful cars, but these multi million dollar price tags don't jive with their historical significance in my mind. I remember reading a recent article that was discussing the Ferrari GTO that sold for $56 million. In the same page was an ad for the sale of an F4U Corsair for all of $4 million - with spare engines no less! Really? A war winning WW2 warbird - and a beauty in is own right, advertised for 1/12 that of what was at best a mildly successful racing Ferrari? I don't get it.
