Hey Forum: The speedo on my 66 works fine but the odo has quit. What do you suppose is the culprit and how ugly will it be to get the dash out and make the repair? I appreciate any insight on this.
There's a plastic worm gear that has shelled out (which is why most mid-years don't show over 60,000 miles). I replaced the gears on mine at about 49,000. When the gears shelled out again at 54,000 miles, I didn't go after it again because it was a pain the first time.
I had the same problem about six months ago. I pulled the cluster and removed the speedo/tach assembly. I took it to the Speedometer Service Co. in Roswell. And, for 100.00, it cam back perfect and not a lick of problem since. They do have a website that you can find if you do a search.
Mine went out 2 years ago and I justed had the cluster out to put in a new wireing harness. I figure I don't need to know how many miles I've went as long as I don't use it more than 4000 a year ( for insurance you know).
Heh, mine sat for 18 years and had 73000 on it when I bought it in '97. Been driving it for 3 years and darned if'n it still don't say...73000...
Nice to know I'm not alone out there, my 67 has the same problem since I got it. Maybe one day I'll get brave and fix it. meanwhile as long as speedo keeps workin i'll keep drivin. :D
