Default Quick sanity check on front disc conversion parts list?

About to order parts for the front half of my disc brake conversion...just want to make sure I have everything accounted for:

1. Spindle - REUSE stock '64 spindle?
2. Caliper mounting bracket - PURCHASE stock '65-'67 bracket
3. Hub assembly - PURCHASE stock '65-67
4. Rotor - PURCHASE stock '65-67 compatible rotor
5. Caliper - PURCHASE Wilwood D8 calipers with pads

Obviously the swap will also include a new master cylinder and brake lines.

Thanks for the assistance, just wanted to make sure I haven't missed anything.

If you're changing to DOT 5 (good time to do it):

Denatured alcohol
DOT-5 fluid

Not sure about the spindles.

There's a rotor dust shield I would go ahead and install. Your old brake lines may fit but I would replace them.

Yes, the entire system will be new including master cylinder/hard lines/flex lines so I will switch to the DOT 5 fluid.

Good call on the dust shield....forgot about that.

I think you may need the 65-68's spindle also, to do your conversion. 63-64 spindles are a different part number than the 65-68's. They may not have the threaded boss, to mount the caliper bracket too.

I'd check with Wilwood before using DOT 5. About 2 years ago, new EPA regs required a change to the chemical make up of DOT 5, and it may now be harmful to caliper seals. Most of the brake companies will no longer honor the warranty on calipers that have been used with DOT 5.

Lonestar Caliper started warning against the use of DOT 5, around the first of the year, and Muskegon did shorty after. The following was posted by Muskegon Brakes in another post, about a week ago.

"We have stopped selling and so have many other vendors due to the change in formulation brought on by the EPA approximately 1.5 years ago. They forced the manufacturers of the Silicone fluid to change their formula and the result is that the fluid is causing seals to swell and leak. There have been a lot of people using it and unfortunately with the government there isn't a fast fix. That's why the warranty is being voided if silicone is used. It isn't where you get it, it's a government standard now. Hopefully they can get it situated so we can all enjoy the benefits of DOT5 again soon."

I'd heard that but never saw it in writing. I guess I'll wait to swap over.

Why don't you buy the whole shebang from me? I bought a show car frame from a forum member in Kansas City one time that I later sold and kept the 4 corners. I think it was a 66. Have all the spindles, front A arms/springs, calipers, rotors, brake parts and trailing arms. No parts list required. I can sell for less than buying new. I sold the bare frame for the same price as the loaded frame. All are show car quality with the chalk marks etc and have never been used. Send me your email and I'll send pictures if you want. This would leave you with only having to change the MC and brake lines. Your 64 ebrake setup works with discs. I could shrink wrap it all to a pallet and ship it. I think you said you already have new offset rear arms, you could take the parts from my arms and put them on yours.

You need 65 and up spindles. Mine are actually 79.

Learn something new every day on here. The EPA is staffed by certifiably insane people. I don't know what the formulation issue was with DOT 5 brake fluid, but we're all too aware of the ZDDP problem with post-2005 motor oil, and yeah that was to satisfy the EPA - they wanted cat converters to last longer.

To top it all, I've been looking in every pharmacy I can find for the last few years for Primatene Mist. The stuff probably saved my life one or two times. Just for the heck of it, I looked on line and found the product was taken off the market in 2011 because of the EPA!!! They didn't like the CFC propellant in it. Ozone hole and all that. I swear the EPA looks for safe, effective, inexpensive materials and regulates them out of existence just to make us suffer.

Thanks for letting me rant.

You forgot the 10# residual valve and proportioning valve for the rear line. You also need new/different wheels or spacers to clear the calipers.

When I put the front disks on my '64, I took the spindles and everything else from there from a '77, but one side had a bent arm that engages the steering arm.

Because of this, I took these pieces from the '64 but had to drill out the bolt holes one size to accomodate tha larger '77 bolts.

You will also need an alignment.

If you have the repop fake knock offs, the discs will work with them. That is what I have on my 63.

I'm also doing rear discs at the same time, along with a Baer 15/16 dual master cylinder and adjustable prop. valve so the 10# residual valve won't be an issue.

I'm hoping to run 15x7 Torque Thrust Ds on all 4 corners, but Ill have to test fit a wheel after I get everything bolted up....seems that the Wilwood D8 calipers are hit or miss with 15 inch wheels.

Since I'm ordering all new parts anyway, Ill probably just order the '65-'67 spindles/hubs/caliper mounting brackets so that everything bolts up without issue.

An alignment will definitely be in order...especially given the new rear trailing arms.
