Default Speedo Gear

I have a 65, 327, 4 speed Muncie, and i rebuild the tranny and the speedo gear was to slow, so i replaced it with the correct gear. Now it worked find for a short time then stop working. I can turn the cable and the speedometer moves but after reinserting the gear a 2nd time it still will not work. I thought it was in far enough! What can i do to fix the problem? thanks

The gear inside the trans could have moved on the main shaft. If that's the case you need to remove the trans to repair

Possible that is a small hole. You could poke in there with a screwdriver or if you have a bore scope

If you put a drill on the trans end of the speedo cable can you move the speedometer?

We (I) need more information.
First, how many teeth were on the gear you removed?
Second, how many teeth were on the gear you installed?

Yes, it makes a difference, because there are TWO different size DRIVE gears INSIDE the tranny and there are TWO different size DRIVEN gears which go into the side of the tail housing.
It is imperative that the drive and driven gears are the correct sizes so that they mate correctly.

The larger DRIVE gear inside the tail housing will only mate with the smaller 17-22 teeth DRIVEN gears.
The smaller DRIVE gear inside the tail housing will only mate with the larger 22-25 teeth DRIVEN gears.

Also, ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL the plastic driven gears are color coded. What was the color of the gear you removed and the color of the gear you installed?
Little things like this make a difference.

Here are the two different sizes of drive and driven gears. Not much difference, BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT, the difference is enough that they won't mesh properly if they are not correctly matched.

I went from a 20 to an 18 and thing were good, correct speed. I didnt know of the different size drive gears in the tailstock, so i dont know which one i have, but like i said it worked great for a shot time.
