Default Ignition coil replacement help..

For years and years I thought all GM ignition coils were interchangeable and swapped em back and forth seemingly without issue. Now though I know that is not the truth.

I want to replace the coil in my 66 with something with higher voltage. Car is really pretty stock,

Can anybody enlighten me on the right part to use? Still run points in the original distributor. Small Block...Thank you.

Go to Napa and buy a IC-12 ignition coil or try to find a NOS 202 coil, that's what came on your car.

Higher voltage does not equal higher performance A 202 coil is correct for small block cars with points. TI and BB used something else

The much touted higher voltage coils really don't do much in a stock setup.

Voltage (which is basically potential energy) is going to jump the spark plug gap at the minimum voltage that can cross the gap..

So your sexy 45,000V coil will prob never be asked to produce more than 20,000V.

There is both a NAPA IC-12 and a STANDARD UC-12 (shown in JohnZ's picture)..

Default Uc 12x blue streak

Is the standard uc 12x blue streak coil any better than the standard uc 12 coil? Some say it is higher quality and others say that is not and it just has the ugly blue color!!

Standard used to say the "X" blue streak parts were heavier duty than the standard oem replacement parts, some you could see the difference visually i.e. points and caps and rotors, however some look the same except for the color.

I must admit I have been using them for well over 40 years and had no problems with them, they are still my go to brand, "X" blue streak if available, if not I use the standard brand.
