The truss bridge you see on the left is the Tappan Zee bridge over the Hudson River built in the 50s. It was designed to last 50 years. It has been replaced by 2 cable stayed bridges that Cuomo named after his father (The Mario Cuomo Bridge)- against the wishes of a great majority of residents.

The new Tap is open? Drove by in many years in Construction phases. Amazing bridge.
Tappen (indian tribe) Zee (river). NYS Thruway, I-87. This bridge will certainly change things. Old Tap was scary at the end.

It's too bad the old bridge was only a 50 year design. It was definitely a cool design, very nice looking especially at night. The Mario Cuomo bridge??? I guess they wanted a monument to higher taxes and lower employment while driving out corporate jobs.
On a purely personal note, I really liked the old bridge. A few years ago, when my mom was still with us and I was consulting in Boston, I used to travel across that bridge every month to visit her in NJ. Brings back many good memories.

The old bridge was identical to the one that dropped into the Mississippi. Outdated design, far obsolete and overused, never beautiful. The new bridge is an amazing tribute to New York State and progressive thinking. Not sure who or how they did it but knocked it out of the park. Bridge is part of the NYS Thruway system, mostly funded by tolls.

Similar thing happened in the SF Bay Area, part of the bridge between Oakland and SF had to be replaced a few years ago and we had two bridges next to each other. Old one is finally almost done being demo'd.

At least the C1 engineering wasn't a design that was obsolete in 50 years. Still is a beautiful vette.

New bridge looks nice - there's a twin beside it, will both sides open at once?
If Cuomo built it, I guess he gets to name it. But have a long bridge here called the "Governor Albert Dean Rosellini Bridge" and everyone actually calls it the "Evergreen Point" or "520" bridge. So whatever people actually call it is what the bridge is called...

Tried to make this not political at the outset...Cuomo is a car guy and has a vette...The C1 is timeless.....The north bound side is open today or Saturday ; southbound side not opening until late 2018.
As a kid my family and I drove across within a day or two of opening in 1955 - in a '55 Belair company car...dad worked for Chevy.
I am crossing it on Monday.

BTW...once upon a time I had a monthly opportunity to chat with then Governor Mario Cuomo, I found him to be a quality person. As a lifelong resident of the NY Metro area, the death of the Tappan Zee bridge was long overdue. There was no bridge in the region I had greater disdain for.

Dad started there in 1937.
I worked the night shift there between college semesters 1969.

I drove over the old bridge probably 500+ times when I worked for IBM in Hawthorne, NY. Glad it has been replaced. I rode my 1979 Yamaha 1100 Special over it once at around 120 MPH (in my young and stupid days) and it was a hoot.

Yes. 2 of the 4 Staten Island bridges are being rebuilt (replaced). The Bayonne Bridge and the Gothals Bridge. Amazing where they're getting all the funding to do this. Oh wait in 2000 my real estate taxes were $2600 now they're $10000.
