For all you Top Fighters out there, can you please tell me what is the correct backing for a 1966 Corvette convertible carpet. I'm hearing so many different answers it's driving me nuts. Can someone with the experience tell me what would be correct for judging purposes. Thank you
I'm more of a lover myself.............not really a top fighter.
Buy from Corvette America or Al Knoch and be happy with the carpet. You may lose a few points on color or weave or the stitching, but 99 out of 100 people won't know the difference.
For the final one guy that does, if an NCRS Master Judge, you could at worse lose a few points on your judging score.

There are some repro pieces where you have to just, suck it up, if you can't rejuvenate the original parts. 63 coupe headliners are an excellent example.. You'll take an "Originality" hit of a point or two...

Not sure what you are really asking here. Carpets in 66 were molded 80/20 rayon/nylon with double twist loops. The carpet was glued to pretty thick jute backed insulation except for the kick panels, storage compartment cover and the luggage stop divider panel. As Powershift said, pretty much all of the closest replacement sets come from either Al Knoch or Corvette America. Some of my friends insist ACC carpet fits better, but I don't have any personal experience with it and its more expensive than the other two suppliers.
Sounds like you are interested in having the car judged. If so, be sure to study up on the Judging Guide. Bill

65 to 67 carpet it should have no backing at all. From the factory the car had a tar paper covered jute that was installed in the car first. Then the carpet with no backing was glued to the tar paper. 63 and 64 carpet was foam backed and glued to the floor.

I believe Corvette America purchased ACC and that is now what they sell for carpet.
I could be wrong, but think I am correct on this. I'll try and check on it tonight.
