Default Help on Side Pipes:

All,

I have decided to eliminate all thumping noises in rattling that I hear when I'm driving by installing side pipes. I figured it would be an easy fix to all noise issues.

I just need help with a couple questions, if you have the time, I would be grateful for your responses. I checked prior posts and the side pipe help sections, but did not see answers a couple questions that I have.

I purchased a couple 2.5" diameter exhaust manifolds, both have a central exhaust port straight down that is centrally located,(not the exhaust manifolds that are slanted back toward the firewall like the 396). The casting numbers end with 901 and 902 (and are basically a mirror image of each other). The assembly manual doesn't seem to illustrate the 2.5" diameter manifolds, particularly on the 327 (small block), which I have. My OEM exhaust pipes are 2.5" in diameter as well and appear to have the exhaust manifold opening at 90 degrees from the pipe opening.

First question: With the 901 and 902 exhaust manifolds, will everything align as it should when bolted up? Putting it together last night looked as if the side pipe was in front the the fiberglass flange by a few inches (the fiberglass flange being the one that needs to be cut). Makes me think something's not right.

Second question: For the passenger side, since I installed an electronic choke with my new carb, I plan on using the spacer from a 65 FI instead of a real heat riser. Will my stack-up still be correct for the side pipes?

Thanks everyone for your time reading this post. Thank you as well if you have time to reply.

I promise to post picks when they are on...vrrroooom!!

Those manifolds and spacers will work just fine for a SB.

I have a 65 327 coupe with under car exhaust and a 67 427 convertible with side pipes. I seem to be chasing squeaks and rattles on the 65 all the time. For some reason, the side pipe car never seems to have any rattles. Of course, the radio in that car is useless as well.

Watson, thanks for your confirmation as well. No more unknown noises to deal with will be great. Now if I could just get rid of the smell of fuel when I'm driving, maybe rolling down the windows will help or an aftermarket A/C unit.

That sounds like a vent line problem. It may not be that hard to fix.

I switched to side pipes and used hedman coated headers and some larger diameter 2.5" ID pipes. The fit was really nice. The pipes didn't move.

The tricky part was getting the side pipe trim and covers secure with no rattles. I think I used some thin foam weatherstripping pieces behind the upper trim to allow the trim to seat and stay snug. Good hardware is key throughout.

Mine never worked loose
