I'm still trying to find a shop (was waiting on cover retainers. $14 part. $40 shipping )
Now, GT classics says "Jan before we can look at it." Business is good for Leo. Some sweet cars there! But I want it up and running ASAP.
But wanted to see the fit of Allen's pre bent pipe. (Very close!) the shop estimated 4 hours per side without seeing it - quick ball park - I'm thinking it's more like 2 hours max for each pipe and 2 hours getting the trim and covers in place. Plus corvette tax.
As I'm looking at it, is the key to get the covers right in place first - Then, fit the exhaust pipe to the covers?
I'm thinking I can get the trim parts in place myself. I just need a shop to weld the rear mount and collector. Maybe do a little bending.
Why trust the muffler guy with new paint and covers? (Excluding corvette shops)
Any input on this?
Note: if there is a way for me to screw it up, I will find it.

What’s so special that you need to pay someone to do it. Owners have been adding the pipes since they were available at the parts counter in 65.
no welder. no bender.
What is the distance here? Is it flush?
I have some block hugging headers - cheap ones from Summit. I'm not sure all headers put the collector in the same place. Allen's sends slightly longer pipes. Big thing is I don't have a welder or skill set to weld such thin stuff. I'd much rather it was done right.
The covers I can handle...

Why do you need a welder or pipe bender? All the pipes on the market are direct bolt on
See edited post above - non stock motor plus headers. My understanding is that the direct fit is with ram horn OEM style - I could definitely be wrong here...Allen says the location of the collector can vary.

That rear tab is trimed off and your missing the top trim peice.
Hmmm. Back in the day some nice gentleman hogged out my rear fenders for me. They probably reshaped that for some reason. Figures.
I have the trim. I'm just holding that in place to figure out where it should attach.
Maybe someone can post a pic of the proper tab shape amd size.
Also, thought of more excuses to not do the welding.
1. Exhausted.
2. Old
3. Sick
4. Saving energy for rogering wife
5. Hot outside
6. Suck at fabrication (unless playdoh)
7. Math. Can't do it.
8. Muh back!
9. Lazy
Looks like, based on pics in the interwebs, that the rear should flow flush from the rear fender openings.
Yessir, if you don't get that corrected now it will never look right to you. Those rear tabs should be cut off and the cover should be flush at the rear.
Snake,
This may not be much help, but the car is not here right now. This is a factory side pipe car. If you don't get a definitive answer by Tuesday, I'll take a better closeup picture with measurement.

Aha. I see now. I cut off the front tabs for the previous non factory side exhaust but not the rear tabs.
From a design perspective I can see how you want it to flow naturally into the shape of the cover.

Not quite sure what you're getting at here Keith??
that is the nicest fitting lower door and quarter I ever seen. that lower quarter ill fitting problem was anther engineering failure like the coupe roof

I wish mine were that good. We massaged them a bit (added glass) at the rears but the front is what it is.
Don't know where you are located Snake, but if you're near PA, I'll weld them and it'll look good. You just bring the beer.
Austin, Texas! I wish I had the option of getting together with my Corvette brothers and wrenching. Thanks for the offer though.
It's taken me two years to do what I used to do in 2 months. Damn illness kicking my ***. I'm taking off next week to literally sleep for 15 hours a day to see if that helps. Chemo on Wednesday (9 years on it so far every six weeks). Hoping I feel good enough to get the covers mounted and find someone to weld it up.
I really think any good muffler shop can get it done. It just ain't that difficult once the covers are set in place. That, to me is the crucial part. Getting the covers in the right place.
