I have now (short, about 500lbs spec) coils and want to install the (longer, 275 lbs) softer coils I bought. There are many threads on this topic, but some of the more informative ones have the pictures gone (photo bucket wants money...).
Anyone has some advise to give regarding how to remove the short ones and get the long ones in. As you will understand, the less I need to unbolt, the better
Take the shock out. Put a chain around the coil to contain the spring and knock the lower ball joint loose from the control arm while it's supported by a floor jack. Lower the jack and the coil should come out peaceably.
To install the longer, softer spring, just reverse the procedure. I believe the last time I did this, I loosened the control arm bolts at the frame to get a better angle to push the longer spring in place.
No special tools required but compressors are available.
I finally installed the 275 pound inch front coils, and they are EXACTLY what I was looking for. Much more balanced ride (I am a cruiser type) between front and rear suspension (rear leaf spring new too from Eaton, the softer type 196 pound inch ).
Now speed bumps at 50mph don’t feel any longer as if I am hitting the front suspension with a hammer. FYI: car is a C2 coupe with a small block 350/290hp GM crate, vintage air airco, Borgesson power steering.
Funny is that I had to convince Eaton that those were what I wanted, apparently most customers go for the higher rated coils .
Customer service of Eaton is first class by the way
