I have a bag of small black screws and a bag of u nuts with screws.
Does the retainer strip just get screwed to the fiberglass? Then dril holes for u nuts? I don't see how the u nuts would go over the fiberglass and the retainer.
I found these pictures of how the clips attach here on the forum, I think. Mine are similar, it looked BUBBA to me but I guess it's how was done.
Looks like they notched the body to get the clips in place. That's what I was thinking the clips are not long enough. Thanks for the pics.
Do you have the retaining strips?
Anyone else? I'm in the hospital today and tomorrow so I don't have access to the car but want to get this figured out so I can attack it when I recover.
Had emergency surgery Wednesday night to get 6" of small bowel removed. Brutal!

Well, hope you GET WELL soon!
Since you are adding these on a non sidepipe car you need to do some measuring to figure out where the holes and fiberglass removal needs to be to install the clips. As I recall, the black retainer, with the lip on the top, can be attached with two of the screws into the clips since there are two gaps in the sidepipe covers. Then screw down the cover over it with the remaining screws. The long trim piece will now hook into the lip. This PARAGON diagram might be clearer that the AIM picture:
that is correct way but the pictures where most likely showing the correct notches in the bird cages that show it to be a real side pipe car
Mine isn't. 81 chassis modified.
If there are supposed to be notches, that explains a lot. I wonder how many people are running without the retainer strip?
I'm hoping someone can post pics of their car with the covers removed.
There must be notches cut in the bird cage and in the fiberglass. No way will those clips reach without some kind of adaptation. I can see that it is possible to just screw them to the body but no way will that hold.
The retainer strip goes on first. Then the cover over that, then the trim strip.
Not sure as I don't have my covers off but I do not remember any type of arc type grind to get the clips to slide on. I believe that they simply slip up onto the fiberglass and hold there. It just appears to me that someone has altered the car in the photos to get the clips to fit to the body.

NO that’s 100% what people want to see when buying a side pipe car

Mine is an original side pipe car. So I'll have to look the next time I have the covers off. Like I said, I didn't remember that particular adjustment but I am getting old and the memory is not as good as it used to be.
The notchs in the bird cage where only done in St Louis bodies for N14 side pipe cars only. The body then was trimed at both lower front fender and rear quarter and I would say they would have been a crude cut
