1966 427/425......just finished restoration, and tach worked fine initially. after driving it for about 50 miles, the tach quit. i pulled cable to inspect it and it seemed fine. i determined that tach works fine by manually spinning the cable from other end, and i also determined that tach drive works fine from distributor by hooking up cable to distributor with other end loose. what am i missing here, both distributor and tach work, but when i install cable to both ends, i get NOTHING? is there a trick to installing the cable to insure that both ends are seated properly into components? cable i am using is 27" . any ideas? thanks, Rick
Did you inspect the cable ends? The tach cable squared end might have broken off a small bit Happened to me once.
thanks for reply....i have seen that happen also.....this is brand new cable, and when it quit working, i ordered a second brand new one thinking that the first was somehow defective. ends look fine on both cables.
Any chance you have the inner cable installed the wrong way? There is a ferrule crimped about an inch away from the end at the tachometer side. This keeps the cable from exiting the tach.
I had a problem with my cable at one time and I couldn't find anything wrong. About the third or forth time I hooked the cable up it worked. On mine there was enough space in the cable sheath for the cable to not engage, but the connector on the tach side was still able to be installed and tightened. Try to push the cable into the tach before you push the sheath and connector up against the tach. Hope you figure it out.

i do have the inner cable installed as you describe....i ended up figuring it out last night. i loosened the distributor so that i could turn it counterclockwise and allow me to hook the cable to the dist drive straight on. i believe that as i was wresting to hook the cable up with a bend in it, the inner drive was pushing it's way back towards the tach, and thus not engaged in the distributor drive. once i hooked it up, i re-positioned the distributor for timing, and the tach WORKS!! thanks for responding. Exactly what I was talking about with mine. I guess this is more common than I thought. Glad you got it fixed.
