I have read that a cross pipe will help smooth out and tone down the side pipes. Has anyone got a picture of an installed cross pipe? It is 1966 427. I had put one on a car years ago and it made the tone a bit more mellow, not much quieter, just smoother. Don't want to reinvent the wheel if someone can help with a picture.
it does not have to be as large a diameter as the exhaust pipes to be effective. just blocking the heat riser crossover in the intake manifold will change the tone of the exhaust. chevy put the cross over pipe on some FI corvettes to change the exhaust tone because the FI engine did not have a intake manifold heat riser cross over like carb engines.

Thanks so much for the audio clips. That is the change I would like to hear. I had put a cross pipe on a Datsun 240Z years ago. Reason is it had a 400 CID Small block and there was not room enough for much in the way of muffling without going to really small pipes. The cross pipe did the trick. I did drive the Vette about 100 miles yesterday and the drone is kind of loud. This is with the Allen Quiet pipes.

I also have the Allen quiet pipes (66 427 L72), They were a little less noisy than the stock pipes, not much of an improvement. I changed my rear end from a 4:11 to a 3:08, now the pipes are no longer obnoxious and it’s a pleasure to drive the car.
