'66 Big Block Temp sensor

'66 Big Block Temp sensor
Been strugglin' with the temp sensor on my '66 427/390 car for awhile now. Can't seem to keep the wire afixed to the "button top" on the plug. It slides on, but also, slides off (way too easily). Once on the plug (in the intake manifold), it works great, but it falls off in regular use. Tried "wedging" a piece of sponge in the clip to make it stay better, but that hasn't been too, too good either. Any suggestions would be most welcome. thanx steve

You need to remove the plastic cover from the end of the wire with a small screw driver to release the brass lock pin inside. Once the cover is off, you can determine if you just need to bend the spring connector so it makes tighter contact, or worse case you can cut it off and install a new one. Then slip the black cover back on. Bill

I'll second NightShiftHD on this as I performed this task a few weeks ago. Insert a tiny screwdriver into the open end of the plastic plug on the top of the brass connector to depress the little tab which will allow sliding the plug back down the wire. Then you can tweak the contact strip to increase it's tension on the button head on the sending unit.

Looks like my first reply had left me speechless! (for the first time in a while!) So, I'll take a look at this AM....I even have some of those clips, I think. thanx again, guys. steve

goes to the solenoid on the carb to kick up the RPMS when the AC compressor goes to work. Necessary here in Houston. s

where might i find a sending unit, like this one, with the button top? I think my button top has gotten rounded off and the clip won't hold. The repair kit from CC doesn't look anything like the pictures posted. thanx steve

My clip falls off once in a while too when I just tap it. And it's the original sensor and clip. This is probably the temp sensor that you're looking for, with the correct tip. https://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-AC-Delc...-/222349162108

Steve, you're confusing me. The repair kits from CC (#661294 or 302322) do not include the sender itself. The top button on the sender is not repairable ... it is part of the unit. If your button on the sender is there, and doesn't wiggle ... your sender is likely fine and you just need to repair the connection as I already mentioned.
However if your sender button wiggles, you will need a new sender. You can get one from all the suppliers, including CC (#301083) or eBay as Ken linked. Fyi. Bill

Sorry 'bout the confusion. I recognize that the button top is part of the sending unit (screws into the intake). After a fight, the black protective cover came off the wire. My connector looks like the one that CC sells in its "repair kit", and not at all like the ones in Bill/Nightshift HD's photo. Without the black "condom", my connector snaps firmly on the sending unit. I drove the car to work this AM and had no problem getting the wire to stay on point/button. let me try this awhile, then reattach the protective cover. Thanx again for everyone's help.
BTW the AC Delco sending unit (G1852), used on a gazillion cars can be had at Amazon for about 1/2 the price quoted above.

Steve, the only difference in the wire connector between the kits and the picture I posted is the color. They are the identical wire connector ... just happens the box full I have is brass ones and the original ones are tinned (silver colored). Bill
