NY titles?

1972 and older vehicles do not have a "title" from NYS. Transfer can be accomplished by signing the registration together with a bill of sale setting forth the purchase price so that NY (or some other jurisdiction) can assess the appropriate tax.

IF the registration say 'transferable' it is all you should need but talk to your local DMV, each state is different.

Reg will say transferable, this and the bill of sale is all that is needed. 1973 was the start of titles in NY

Dtf-802
You need the registration (all are transferable before 1973) and a DTF-802 form from the NYS DMV. It can be printed off the DMV site.
This form replaces a bill of sale. It declares the sale price. It is intended to be used if the sale price is lower than market value or is a gift but I have always used it on private sales. The sales tax is calculated on this form. The buyer must add SS# and sign it. The seller must sign it also.
I'm not sure if pre-1973 registrations mention salvage. 1973 and newer titles definitely do.
I think NY was late to the game on issuing titles for cars.

They have a printable bill of sale form on their website, so I always print and fill that out also in case one of the clerks is having a bad day.
