1957 column mount tach with RED face
I have a chance to buy a RED face column tach to replace the black face tach on the 56.
I've seen a picture (from right here) of a red face tach, but know nothing about them. SUPPOSEDLY only a handful of red faces were made.
Does anyone know ANYTHING about such a tach, and, most important, the price is $1000. Should I pay that much for one????

The problem is that the chrome bezel is crimped on around the case. It would require prying loose the back side of the bezel which would leave permanent damage to the bezel, and I don't want to do that. PLUS, if in fact the red face tach is one of a few that AC actually built, its value may be worth the price. That's why I've inquiring about it. I know that's a LOT of $$$$$ for an old tach, BUUUUUUUUUUUT, if it is a genuine article, I probably should give it serious consideration!

I guess if you like the red face tach well enough (?????), go for it. It could be your Christmas present to yourself. I'm sure you've been a "good boy" this year.
Merry Christmas Tom.

Tom, I've seen a few of these "red face" 8K RPM tachs over the last 5 or 6 years, but I NEVER saw one 15 or 20 years ago. Even though they look pretty neat and would for sure be a nice addition to your beautiful 56, I am not convinced they were really created by the General back in 1957. I've seen plenty of original black face 8K tachs and have owned a couple of them. I agree with you about trying to remove the chrome bezel.............................. .....DON'T DO IT!!
