Default Shift linkage

I understand the procedure to properly set the shift linkage on my M20.
The two notches in the shift plates need to align and then adjust the rods with the the trans in neutral. My question is this:

- Is there a best way to keep the notches aligned? I know a Hurst has holes to insert a tool to hold them in place. Please let me know the best way to keep the notches perfectly aligned while adjusting the rod lengths.

Thanks

There's actually three slots, one in each lever 1/2 3/4 and reverse. Read this and you can make your own or order one from any Corvette vendor. Doesn't have to be fancy, just the right width.

1/4" allen wrench fits in the groves, or any other 1/4" dia rod.

Isn’t that only true for a Hurst? I belive the OP is talking about a OEM Muncie shifter.

Looks like you actually have two questions.

If your shifter is reasonably tight, clean and lubricated, you should be able to adjust it as described above and not have to mess with it again for many, many thousands of miles.

MikeM,
Working under the car, it seems like using one person to hold the 1/4" rod in the two notches while a second person adjusts the rod lengths might be a good way to do the job.
Do you agree?

You can't use a 1/4" rod on a stock OEM shifter. The shift plates have a rectangular slot, not a hole. You can easily make an alignment tool from a short piece of 1/8" thick x just under 5/8" wide metal. Stick it all the way thru all shift plates and tighten up the nuts on the rods. Easy peasy. Bill

On another thread from today I just saw JV04 posted this pic of his linkage with his alignment tool inserted in the slots ... if that helps you. Bill
