Default 65 firewall hole?

hey there guys, i am finishing up my firewall and have this one hole left i cant figure out. when i stripped the firewall this hole had a rivet in it. but it was smooth on the engine side, like it had been sheared off or broken? in the int it was a small alum rounded head. this was not a after market pull style rivet, it was a crush style. it is in the proper spot that it could be for starter wire routing and clamping with a wire tab. i have looked through the AIM and could not find any info. i am hoping that someone can point this out for me, or show me there firewall? is it a empty hole that the factory just smashed a rivet too plug it? give me your thoughts guys! thanks troy

The hole you have circled is for the J clip that retains the speedometer cable and the lower J clip in the photo retains the pos battery cable

Stewart,
A bit tough to see, but look closely and you will see a "J" clip in that location. Mine has nothing in it, but as mentioned, I believe it is to retain the speedometer cable.

I think we agree on that Leif. Pg E302 0f the 65 AIM shows the firewall clips locations for C60 and L78 on the upper half of the page plus the pos battery cable routing on the lower half. Page E376 shows the speedo cable routing. My observation of many cars is that the assy line workers weren't quite as extracting with the clip locations as the engineer that drew up the plans in the AIM envisioned.

I need to amend my post #6. The other "J" clip would be used for the speedometer cable only if the car was equipped with M35 (automatic transmission). The 4-speed car's speedometer cable routed down the driver's side firewall to the transmission. Apologize for any confusion.

Leif,
Photo of my 1967, L-79, 4 spd., firewall when I pulled the engine over 10 years ago. When I magnified the photo, I couldn't see the extra hole and I provide the photo for information purposes only.
Rick
P.S. Love the goop running down the firewall from the heater core area.

Yes,
If you are referring to the j clip just below the lower heater hose connection. I believe this photo shows the way it came from the factory but I am not the original owner.

My knowaglbe steems from helping with dads cars. So my knowledge base only is good for 4 types. 2 67 SB 4-speed a base engine and L79. One 67 427/390 now 400 auto AC car and now a 65 L76 car. Anything after that I am about clueless. But lucklly they are popular cars to own

Excellent picture Rick. The hole you're "missing" would only be there for the "J" clip for the positive battery cable for either a BB or A/C car. Yours is correct as is. Crystal clear pic of the speedo cable routing. Now, I just need to get my speedo cable in my empty "J" clip. Thanks, again, for the great picture.

Nope. The 4-speed speedo cable only routed down the driver's side firewall in '63 and '64 when the speedo connection was on the driver's side of the tailhousing. From '65-up, all 4-speed speedo cables went through the firewall with the tach cable and routed across and down the passenger side firewall to the transmission connection on the passenger side of the tailhousing. '63-'67 3-speed and Powerglide cars had the speedo cable routed down the the driver's side.
