We all know there is some kind of spell associated with these vehicles that affects some people more than others.
Last week I was parked (66 roadster) in our village to shop, with my wife driving our truck, parked in the spot next to the vette. I came out to talk with her and looked over and saw the following:
8 boy scouts on bikes in front of the vette
bikes on ground
kids looking at the car
one kid moving around it waving his hands very closely over the car's body, making a big show of some kind of energy field he was feeling. Moved his hands fluidly 2 inches above the fenders, body language like a medicine man blessing (experiencing?) a holy site. Kid was not older than 8 years. Appeared to be spontaneous idol worship or love at first sight. He looked happy.
Hank if the parents are around next time take em for a ride.I live in a small village also population around 3000.I have given alot of rides in the 66.My son gets picked up every wensday at his school by his mom to go to relegion class he insist that mom picks him up with the 02 vette the kids go crazy over it ,and he is the hero of the day.I always take the time to explain to the kids what the car is.
We have a kid in the neighbor hood that stops by to talk (about 12 or so) when ever I have the car on the drive way tinkering with it.(almost every sunday) He will just sit and hand me tools and try and help as much as he can.I was told by my other neighbors he is a troubled kid and very fresh and bad.Every time he is with me he is absolutely the most polite kid I have met so some thing with the car changes him I guess or its just he gives me what I give him.
I have a picture in my office of a drawing he made of my 1966 it is outstanding .I asked him if he showed his parents how nice it was and he said NO they dont care they would tell him its a waste of time he should be out playing in the yard not laying on the floor drawing?
I'm glad you are able to give him some incouragement, sometimes that is all it takes to make a great impression on a kid. And believe me they are impressionable at that age. Most importantly you are taking the time to listen to him.... Congrats... Keep up the good work.... :blueangel:
Andy said it right: you took the TIME to talk to and encourage this kid. You're the kind of neighbour we all need more of. Great effort! May we all follow your example.
Great stories....but lets face it, many (all) of us are old enough to be considered 'mature,' and look how we act around them! :)

Aaaaahhhh yes, the difference between men and boys is the price of the toys... but the enthusiasm is what needs to be continually nurtured..... everyone responds to that, especially the kids.... to me a BIG smile on a kid's face means I've done something right.... :yesnod:

Re: Midyear magic (Hank)
Heh Hank,
Great story. It's good to hear that the Midyear helped bridge the gap and form a bond. Sounds like the boy has something to look forward to on Sundays. I never thought about how a Corrvette could help Troubled Kids, but you seem to have come up with a great approch. There's no question that a Midyear Or C-1 are striking the first time you see one in the glass (as in,the flesh) for the first time.
It's sort of like the dogs that are brought to hospitals to vist and give compfort to the sick. Maybe you have just figured out a new way to help troubled kids. .........Get some some classic Vettes together and see what happens.
Hank,
Thanks for the post. I give rides to the young and elderly as often as I can. My mom is in assisted living and the folk's there love the car and always have a story to tell. Press on..... and drive this great machine! :D
Hank, Ih2lose, and Andy. You all are right on.....sometimes you never know what will focus a meandering kid and turn he or she around. If its your car, follow up on it....it may save a life's direction or even a life..... Don't lose the opportunity; its one of those "bonus Points" deals for you in the future!!!! :D :yesnod:
It happened to me with a bad-news teen that I turned on to fly-fishing in high school. He now is a successful realtor, but his parents still tell me how he just did a 180¡ in his life after I took him to the mountains, put him on a river with one of my fly rigs and gave him some lessons in casting, chasing trout, and life. One of the best feelings I have ever experienced!
Giant   to those who take some time with kids today!!!

Im impressed with the help that you are giving the young man. Certainly something seems to be possibly missing from
his home life. Have you ever had your car at a show and heard the parents telling the inquisitive children not to get near
the car. Want to see a kid light up. Let him sit in it. offer to take his picture in it if he or you have a camera availble and
see that he/she gets a copy. Maybe what we have found as great therapy for us is also great therapy for kids. You are
to be commended. Hopefully you have the picture that he gave you promently displayed and he knows it. :seeya

I have told him its in my office on the wall my wife brought it outside to show him the frame she put it in and he turned bright red when he seen it.
He has been visiting for a while and his mom speeds by the house and see's him on the driveway and has not stopped once to meet me or my family to see what type of a guy I am. There alot of things I can assume from what I have seen or actually not seen of his parents or parent.
I know we have all heard the saying it takes more than a family to raise a child it takes an entire village to raise a child I figured out what it meant when I had my first kid.
We all actually can make a difference almost every day to positively effect somebody.I honestly set out every day to make a positive effect on somebody I meet or know.
