I replaced my Delco with another Delco after 16 years last year. Problem I had on my '67' was the new Delco 24 PG series lip on the bottom of the battery where the hold-down bracket goes was to high, so the original hold down wouldn't secure the battery. I had to fabricate another hold-down bracket that captured the lip which was a bit higher on the battery. This bracket may be unique to a '67', not sure.
I don't know guys. It seems that when my battery fails, it is always right before a show or a critical event wherein I must demonstrate that the car will, in fact, start! Each and every time! And I am embarrassed. The jumper cable was left at home so that the trunk would be clean and clear and all those trick, gismos that plug into the *** lighter never work. So, what do I do---it's Napa, Auto Zone, Pep Boys or the nearest auto parts store, whatever it might be called, to the rescue. At least with a senior or military discount, I fell like I'm saving a few bucks and eventually getting the vette to start. At least until tomorrow!!
I have a $200 Optima Yellow in the coupe that is just over 3 years old. I don't disconnect or float charge it and generally drive once a week. I am waiting for it to fail so I can join the list of people saying they have gone down hill !
I just returned from a 1 month holiday during which I thought I should disconnect it but forgot, the car fired right up like normal.
I have another car in storage with a 15 year old Optima Red Top. It "died" 2 years ago when I left it connected idle for 6 months but I used the 2nd battery method to revive it and now its like a new one !
Always check the date on the battery. If you are buying a ac delco and there labels are hard to read ask the sales man. If your battery is past its expiration date it is placing a load on your starter . . Voltage drop produces heat , So if it is a 75p ac that is an 18 month battery.I find checking battery voltage once a month even with a float charger does not extend the life. It all has to do with the age of the battery.
I have had excellent service, typically 10 + years, from AGM batteries. On vehicles that I don't use frequently enough to keep them fully charged I do rotate a couple of battery maintainers throughout the garage. AGM's I've used and had excellent success with are Exide, Interstate, Odyssey and Yuasa.
One other point I would make is that to suggest that all batteries made by Johnson Controls are equal is foolish. Yes, Johnson Controls makes a lot of batteries for a wide variety of customers. Many are of the highest quality, but most are made to the customers specifications, and all are not necessarily equal.
