65 Steering Column

I removed my steering column the other day to do some work on the console. I'm ready to reinstall it and wondered why that clamp (see green circle on pic) is there. What does it do, and if there is an adjustment, what is it?

My understanding is that it clamps around the shaft and tightens against the bottom of that spring to hold pressure upwards on the lower column bearing.

Compress the spring with either a .010" or .020" shim between the coils and tighten the collar clamp.

all pre 66 GM columns have that spring clamp design. as said above its for the lower barring pre load. it can also be used to adjust the shaft a little bit to clear the hub
