Default gray wire

I swapped out the fuse block on my 1960 Corvette and replaced the wire exactly as they were in the old block. Now I have the tail lights on constantly. I disconnected the gray wire from the aux block plug, the lights went out. Without that wire connected EVERYTHING works so I've kept it disconnected. How do I find out what this gray wire is for?
I get 12 volts to the wire regardless if the lights are on. So what would a gray light power all the time?

Hmmm. If you truly replaced them exactly as they were, check to see if there’s a short in the new block.

According to my 60 diagram, there are 2 gray wires to the fuse block. One comes up from the headlight switch, goes through the inst fuse, then out the other side of the fuse feeds 12v to all the instr lamps. It should only have 12v on it when the lights are in park or on positions. Do your tail lights work with that wire you disconnected off?
