Went to start my 65, 327 300hp corvette, starter just spinned tried 4 times then kicked in and started. Installed a new Solinoid , did the same thing ?? Installed a new Bendex starter drive still does the same thing?? never had a problem before? Whats next, shims or a new starter.
Thanks in advance for any tips!!!
You should have either corrected or at least found the problem with your work. I'd suspect your new "Bendix" is bad. Bench test it to see that the plunger is pulled into the solenoid and the gear is shifting out. If so, it's got to be the "bendix".
Is it a stock GM starter? Have you checked the teeth on the flywheel to make sure they are not worn or damaged. Is the starter drive actually engaging or is it just splining? With the starter out hook it up to a battery and jump out the solenoid and watch what it does. It would be usual if it was just a shim problem with the stock starter to completely miss the flywheel. I would replace the starter.
The symptoms aren't described very well but generally speaking............
If the starter just clicks, it's almost always a solenoid. Assuming good battery and good connections.
If the starter spins but doesn't contact the flywheel, you can assume the solenoid is good and the starter drive or linkage is worn or dirty.
If the starter spins and you hear the starter pinion grinding against the flywheel the starter might need to be shimmed, flywheel ring gear teeth worn or the starter drive deficient in some way.
I wouldn't discount the armature bushing being worn on the starter drive end but I've just never seen it cause a problem in starter engagement.
