I had to move the alternator to the drivers side of the car to install my Vintage Air and decided to install the new voltage regulator I've had sitting on the shelf for 5 years. But now, when at idle, the regulator buzzes very loud. The noise stops when you give it some revs but then the water pump squeals (but that's a question for a different day). Any ideas. '64 300 horse if that might make any difference.

Remove regulator cover & inspect the contact points for wear/pitting. They probably just need to be cleaned-up with a point file.

Either the belt is loose and/or the regulator is calling for full amperage from the alternator..............which might explain the buzzing.
First remove the field connector from the alternator and rev it. Squeal?
Reconnect the field connector, remove the alt belt and rev it. Squeal?
Remove regulator cover....install solid state Wells VR-715 from Autozone ($28); install original cover over new unit. Done...
The only issue with that is the cover is riveted on, so you have to drill out the rivets to put the original cover on. That voids the warranty. Normally, I'd say not a big deal, but my luck is such the darn thing would go Tango Uniform the next day, probably 50 miles from home, and add even more insult to not getting the regulator replaced for free.
I bought the Advance Auto $22 one. Gray cover. I can live with it. After all, a good look will tell you it isn't original even with an original cover. The base metal is thinner and there are no stampings on the base.
But it works great. The random discharges I was having ceased immediately.
Good evening. Going to change out my present regulator to a Wells VR-715 on my 62. Could anyone confirm the wiring colors from the bottom to the top of the wells unit. My old unit starting at the bottom lug goes Red - Brown - Blue _ then braided ground shield at the top of the old regulator. Does the VR-715 follow the same connections points on the four spade lugs bottom to top. Thanks I appreciate your input.

Whoa my friend..
C1s were originally generator cars. If you haven't changed to an alternator do NOT install that VR-715...
