Default Alternator Relocation Problem

I am currently reinstalling the wiring harnesses in my 65 roadster that I am rebuilding. Last month I installed a Speedmaster serpentine system on the engine. Since I also installed a Vintage Air air conditioning system, the alternator is relocated to the driver side of the car so I bought a Lectric Limited alternator relocation kit to handle the wiring relocation. My problem is that the serpentine kit includes a newer style alternator. It has an internal regulator and the wiring terminals are different so the relocation kit installation is not as simple as I thought it would be. I have attached a picture of the back of the alternator where the terminals are located. I have also attached a picture of the ends of the relocation wiring harness that attach to the alternator. It is clear that the red wire goes to the large battery terminal, and the black wire goes to the ground terminal. However there is nowhere to put the grey male push on that holds the blue and black with white stripe wires. The only place on the new alternator that has a female receptacle has 4 pins. So that is not going to work. I talked to Lectric Limited today and was told that they only build the relocation harnesses for the old style alternators and are unable to offer any suggestion as how to make this work. I have been reading about converting to a single wire alternator. Is doing this as easy as just attaching the battery and ground cables and not doing anything with the blue and black with white stripe wires?? If not, I would appreciate guidance on how to make this work.

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

Mark

I am looking at the Lectric Limited Web Site and they list two part numbers that may do the trick.

Part #: VAK6986CS https://www.lectriclimited.com/resto...-harness-93004

Part #: 500295 https://www.lectriclimited.com/resto...-harness-93005

I don't know why Lectric Limited could not have pointed this out to you. Maybe someone else will have another solution if these do not work.

I used the Lectic Limited kit the OP shows to relocate the alternator to the PS for a Vintage Air install...its meant to be used with a stock setup with an external voltage regulator and horn relay... It works perfectly in that situation.

The OP may have just ordered it online without asking about details with a tech person - we don't know... He should call them now...

Suggest you phone mad electrical and tell them what you are trying to accomplish. Prior to phoning them you should ID the alternator which to me looks like a CS series alternator. If a CS alternator is what you have then you are converting from the first generation GM external regulator to the CS series internal regulated alternator. You can obtain their contact info from the web site http://www.madelectrical.com/index.shtml

Specifics they may ask for is if you are keeping an idiot light, have an amp or volt gauge. Suggest you ask how long your wiring run should be using the adapters and compare that to what you have.

Check out the electrical tech section "one wire alternator compared to the three wire alternator"
http://www.madelectrical.com/electri...hreewire.shtml

Also American Auto wire has a conversion harness 37787 and check the short video at the bottom of this web page. https://www.americanautowire.com/sho...rsion-kit-4576

Hope this helps., Cheers

Mark,

I just did this a few weeks back with my serpentine system. I bought the Relocation Harness and the Lectric Limited internal regulator conversion wire below:

https://www.lectriclimited.com/conve...-harness-84961

Not sure what your pin layout looks like on your connector but they have this one too:

https://www.lectriclimited.com/conve...-harness-84962

I haven't found their service response to be that great. I contacted them, through their site, and never received a response....should have called.

BTW, here's the thread I started about my alternator:

Dex.

Thank you for your responses. Yesterday after digging out from the snow storm I tried to track down what alternator came with the Speedmaster serpentine kit. There are no makings on the alternator case that I could see. I could not get a phone number for Speed Master so I called JL Fabrications who sells the serpentine kits. I talked to very nice fellow who works in the tech area. He spent a lot of time with me explaining what the alternator was and how to wire it. The alternator is a CS-130 series alternator used by Chevy from 1986 – 1993 that is been rebuilt by Speed Master. He said that the units are rebuilt to be used as a single wire alternator. Just attach the red battery wire to the post on the back of the alternator and that is it. I don’t understand any of this but I believe he indicated that the way it is rebuilt it self excites(?). He said that the blue wire in the alternator relocation kit is the exciter wire and the other goes to an idiot light. Since the rebuilt alternator excites itself the blue wire is not needed. I don’t remember if there is an idiot light on the instrument panel so I guess I don’t need that either. I will need a wire to feed the volt meter though so I need to find out about that. I have been reading about one wire vs three or four wire alternators and the recommendation seems to be not to use a one wire system. I am going to call Lectric Limited on Monday to discuss the harnesses that Vitaminmopar and 58n65 have provided part numbers for. The one that looks like it will fit the 4 pin connector on the alternator is the VAK6368CS. I hope someone there can explain what it does and if the regulator will work properly if it is used. It appears from the picture of the connector that there is only one wire going from the adaptor to the alternator relocation harness to the 4 pin connection on the alternator. I will let you know what they say. If they are no help I will call Madelectrical. I went to their website and read some of their articles….very interesting.
