Default Need Vent Cable Help

My RH side vent cable handle broke on my 66. I have the new cable, but I can’t figure out how to get the old one disconnected from the vent. The heater box is blocking one of the screws to the vent cover, so I haven’t been able to get that off yet, and I also can figure out how the end of the cable comes off and re attaches to the vent. Any help/pictures would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The vent cable should have a wire loop at the end that goes inside the vent grill and over top of a round shaft allowing it to pull the vent flapper door to and fro (open and closed)...there is a small metal nut that goes on the vent door shaft to prevent the loop from coming loose.

The cable housing is secured with a screw to the outside of the vent grill. If its on the PS of the car - yeah it will be a royal PITA to get installed.

This is the driver's side but you'll get the idea...

The ear that holds that screw keeps breaking off for me (2 so far). For now I jam a towel in there, in summer it doesn't matter. My cable is really stiff, seems to stress that tab. (Drivers side) Maybe its my cable, its all there though...

Unfortunately on the passenger side the one screw is behind the heater box to get it out you need to remove the heater box. When guys restore the cars many do not put that screw back in just for that reason.

Maybe there is a better repro cable, but yeah I feel ya. Those cables are stiff and the routing sucks, puts a lot of stress on the mount point at the vent grille. I've heard of the issue with that one vent screw access before, not sure what to tell you on that score.

Yes. This is the problem I’m having. Thought this would be a simple fix. Very frustrating.

Sometimes you have to break something to fix it. I pryed it out (back screw). Put in a new grill without back screw

So, I got the cable replaced without having to remove the heater box and without breaking anything. I removed all screws except for the back one, which can’t be reached. I was able to pry open the vent with it “hinging” on the back screw. I was able to use needle nose pliers to reach in and get it done. I figured that if the vent happened to break, I’d just get a new one.

They pivot in holes in the body . . . here's a pic of the passenger side vent door I removed when I recently added VA - the bottom pivot is fixed, the top pivot is spring-loaded! Put the bottom in first, pull the top pivot down and find the hole it fits in! Done!
