Default Brake adjustment

If i want to adjust passenger side drum brakes ..which way does the adjuster turn to tighten the shoes? If I am looking at wheel from the outside does the adjuster wheel turn clockwise to tighten or loosen? Also does the driver side turn same direction or is it reversed. Sounds stupid I know but I haven't done this in a long time. Thanks

Lonzoo:

For starters, which year car are we working on?? Your profile shows only a 1978.

Solid axle?? Early C2?? Assume you are talking about the primary car brakes and not emergency brake shoes on a 65-67 disc brake car.

If you have self adjusters, which the 64 should have, then the star wheel will only turn one way. The self adjuster lever will allow it to rotate in the tighten direction only. If it does then it is not working properly.
Looking at the picture of the self adjuster you can see that the outside of the wheel will only rotate downward away from the lever. I assume you got the drum on and at least three lug nuts, on backwards, holding the drum to the hub.
Working through the slot, using a brake spoon, contact the star wheel and move the end on the spoon upward, which will turn the wheel downward.
I tighten the shoes until the drum does not spin and I hit the backing plate with a rubber or dead blow hammer to center the shoes. Then I readjust the star wheel, then I back off about 5-6 clicks untill there is light drag on the drum. Make sure you do this on both sides and back off the same amount of clicks.

Here is the star wheel and self adjuster lever:

Here is the special tool I use to grab the lever and pull it away from the star wheel to loosen the adjustment:

Here are my assortment of brake spoons:

Insert the "tool" in the slot, with hook up, and grab the lever and gently pull it back as you move the spoon down to loosen the adjustment:

Should have mentioned it was an early 63.

You should be able to get them close with the drums off so they have a slight drag...then, if your self adjusters are working properly just backup and pump them...

Good idea there. Might need to take hubs off and make sure self adjusters are operating since I have never had them off since I bought the car. Brakes work and feel good but inspection will tell me more...Thanks
