Default heater ***** on a no a/c car

I have what appears to be an original owner's manual for my 66 L79 convertible. The diagram in it shows the following *****:

(L) Fan Temp Pull and (R) Air-Pull-Def

However, the ***** in my car (which look very old and original) look as follows:

(L) Air Pull Fan and (R) Defroster Pull

So, is the manual correct or were there some mid-model differences? Or, maybe mine aren't original.

And, I'm figuring to get max heat I should pull the left **** all the way out for max temp, rotate the left **** full CW for max fan and pull the right **** out to first detent for heater, not defroster. Does that sound good to you guys?

The ***** are as simple as they get.

The heat controls on my 65 and will assume unchanged for 66 are as follows:

Left **** has two function, temp and fan speed. Pull it out for max heat and rotate the **** clockwise to select the three fan speeds. If you want the fan on but no heat, just rotate the ****, and don’t pull the ****.

The right **** is “where do you want the air to go”?
All the way in In is off, pulled half out is floor (center consul) and pulled all the way out is defrost.

Fun fact. The 65 coupe has a variable speed rear compartment exhaust fan that is controlled by a pull **** next to the pull **** for the drivers side kick vent. If that fan is on, it shuts off automatically if you pull the left heat **** out.

This is my '66 convertible. Pull the left **** out for max heat, rotate it for fan speed.

Pull the right **** for defroster, leave 1/2 way out for max airflow to interior ducts.

For max heat in the car, left **** all the way out, rotate for max fan speed. Right **** should be 1/2 the way out. If you wanted partial defrost and some duct heat, the right **** would be pulled out about 2/3 out, splitting the air between def and duct heat.

I agree the labeling is not the best. Just sit in your car with it warmed up and feel the airflow and temp as you move the ***** and you'll know the approximate settings and what they do.

Enjoy the heat!

Thomas

Actually, on 64-65 rear fan power is disconnected when you rotate heater fan switch anywhere except off. Pulling temp out only moves a door in the heater box.

Don't forget the 64 coupe has the rear fan also. Ask me how I know.

So I was correct in assessing how to get max heat. But, why are my controls labeled differently than the diagram in the owner's manual? Are they from a different year?

Default heat *****

The indicators you are describing I believe are for an A/C car. The **** on the left for an AIR car operate the right fresh air door when pulled and turn for fan speed. One on the right operates the defrost, these indicators are different for no A/C cars.

OP,
Ric has the correct answer. At sometime in your car's past, someone switched out the surrounds from an A/C car. Below is a link for the correct surrounds for a NON A/C car.

Now, of course, if you have factory A/C, those surrounds are correct
