Default Engine ID help - 3731548

New to the forum, so I'll start off by saying hi! I've been a long time lurker when I'm trying to research stuff, I appreciate all the info you guys upload!

I've just bought a motor/trans and the suffix code has got me pretty confused...

The motor trans were removed from an AC Ace that was in the USA and at some time in the 60's it had a chevy motor trans put in (I was told this was partially because the original Bristol motor was hard to work on/get bits for at the time in the USA). The car was a competition Ace and I believe it had some racing history. Now with the value of these things the way they are, the car is back in the UK and is having a Bristol motor put back in. Certain things suggest to me that this may be a vette motor, but I'm stumped by the suffix code (shown below).

What I know is...
  • 3731548 block casting number - J296 date code on the block (I take this to be a '57 283, cast late '56)
  • 3731554 heads - J316 date code
  • 3794129 intake - '63 340hp vette
  • 3733975 Exhaust manifolds - '57 vette/car
  • 1110891 Dizzy - '57-61 vette - No date code on this

The transmission I believe is a '64 vette trans, but if anyone could shed any light or confirmations on this then that'd be great...
  • T10D-1 main casing - F 21 64 date code
  • T10-148B Cover with a tag that states 'LL'
  • T107D Tail shaft
  • 3788421 Bellhousing with a Palmini Engineering Corvette scatter shield

If anyone on here can put forward their verdict on exactly what I have here then I'd be very appreciative!!

Thanks

The 3731548 block was used in 1957 on 265 and 283 cubic inch engines. It should have no provisions on the side of the block for motor mounts. If it is a '57 engine and in good shape, it should certainly have value to anyone restoring a '57 Chevy in need of an original block.

By the way in case you hadn't yet noticed, every small block Chevy engine ever used in an engine swap back in the day, came out of a Corvette. Just as the seller...

Good luck with the project... GUSTO
