Default Restomods are down!!!

Sorry, but I will be the first to tell you that restomods are down.
I haven't been able to sell any of mine lately and after witnessing the results at Mecum, if you are building one for profit, i suggest you think long and hard about consigning it for auction!

This was a really nice car in person, yet only hit $190K
https://www.mecum.com/lots/SC0518-32...e-convertible/

This car did not reach this amount at the auction and quite frankly, I don't know how this guy expects to keep building the same car over and over and over again and selling them for the same amount. It's boring! Charcoal gray with red or black interior every time with chrome valve covers...

https://www.mecum.com/lots/SC0518-32...-window-coupe/

and better yet, someone attempted to sell a mediocre/poor quality 63 split window restomod build (at no reserve),they purchased for $275K at mecum in 2015 and it ended up only selling for $90,000. It had all of 12 miles on it, so that should tell you something or that Mecum was behind the entire thing!

There a fad like most things are. I built my personal 60 a long time ago. Before they got to be so hot. The SRIII chassis was still new and not many people even knew what it was. I could still come out on top with mine but I built it for me. Nobodys getting it till I'm dead.

Alot of the problem with muscle cars Vettes inc is the guys that want them are dying off. Go to any Cruise nite. We are all old men. The younger guys don't even look at these cars. 10/15 years down the road i think these cars will go the way of the model A.

True Orig. cars may stay up some but all the guys that think they have gold will gone or to old to care.

The Jeff Hayes car doesn't look like a poor quality build.

$190k, $190k! That is a lot of money! Is it worth that kind of money? Has it won any significant car shows? Good-guys? ISCA? Super Chevy Shows? NCRS? Without a pedigree I can see the problem. Without an up close view around the car you don’t know the build detail. Photos can be very deceiving.

It wasn’t long ago that $150k for one of these cars was a great amount. But to use this single data point or two is not worthy of getting excited about.

Have C2 restomods ever consistently hit the big numbers the 61-62's do?

There are lots more cars and builders in the market to choose from. Therefore, it makes sense as the supply goes up, the price will drop.

I think both of the cars in the OP links are beautiful!!!

Not sure what to make of this, but the second car sold a year and a half ago for 300k https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0117-26.../#&gid=1&pid=1

Why is he selling the same car(Vin 8) again?

Restomods don't sell as well at Mecum as they do at BJ, IMO.

The one that sold for 300 k a year and a half ago isn't owned by the builder that sold it back then. I agree if your selling a Restomod it has to go to Barrett Jackson preferably Scottsdale.

Could it be that the market demand for restomods is reaching the saturation point?

Maybe the novelty has worn off?

When they first hit the scene, everyone (rightly, imo) thought they were cool as hell. Now when you see one, you nod appreciably at the craftsmanship and then move on. They're pretty much competing with resto-everything else now - Tri-fives, Camaro's and Lincolns.

Are you saying it doesn't make good financial sense to buy one of these $200-$300,000 resto mods, take about five laps around the county courthouse telling everyone, "look what I've got" and then sell it for half money?

No, it doesn’t. It makes sense to, if you are so inclined and financially able, take five or six laps around the lower 48 in the car in classic styling and modern comfort. Then you can keep it and wax it or sell it. Profit or loss doesn’t matter. Enjoyment does.
