With regard to the term "one owner:"
Well, let me put it this way. The car had one driver all of its life and resided in the same garage all its life.
Pop bought the car because the son was only 16 (spoiled) and too young to legally title a car. The paperwork may have changed later but in reality, it was always the son's car.
I don't expect or place any extra value on a "one owner" car, but it's nice to know that everything that was done to the car over it's life was done by one person. It removes any mystery about who did this or that.

Your opinion may vary..

Thanks for all the replies on this thread. You all have really opened my eyes to how the term can be interpreted/used and abused.

I think several have hit upon the essence of this question to include:
1) From a technical perspective, it's the "first" titled owner. Not second, nor third nor family/friends. There can only be one "first".
2) From a value perspective, it probably doesn't mean much other than potentially a lot of 'unknowns' are somewhat solved along with the possibility of some original documentation, and
3) From the family ownership perspective, keeping it in the family supports the original purchasers legacy.

Sound about right?

Sounds like an exercise in mental masturbation to me but I tend to have different views on this stuff than some.

Apparently, on BaT it does matter as many clammer to have theirs valued as a “one owner” to get the premium it seems to bring. Personally, I could care less. A thorough inspection with a clean title and I’m in.

How much less could you care? A lot less? A little less?

Seriously he's right. All that matters to me - aside from the curiosity and conversational value of knowing the history - is that I own the car now. I would base my purchase price on the condition of the car, not how many people have had legal claim to it over the years.

Ah, a forum with a sense of humor! I like, we’ll get along just fine!

My answer? To the point where I try not to make an involuntary snicker if the seller mentions it.

Welcome! A sense of humor and a thick skin can both come in handy at times. But you will find a wealth of information here. What one person does not know, someone else has already been there done that. One piece of advice is make use of the "search" function. Use the "advanced search' which lets you seek phrases or words, and narrow it down to this particular forum, etc. Many times I'm about to ask a question, decide to do a forum search, and find 6 threads already on that topic. The other advice is that - with occasion exceptions - it's usually bad form to dig up and reply to ancient threads.

It's actually quite comical how individuals can/may construe items that seem pretty straight forward.

I like to think that am the first owner of a 2000 Corvette Hardtop as it was a lease vehicle that was returned at the end of the lease. It is still fairly original.
