Default Engine numbers help please

Trying to help a friend out who just picked up a 63 roadster, and has an engine block with F0409RE on the pad.
Can anyone please decipher what motor this is, as it's obviously not the original.

Thanks in adavance.....

Not knowing the casting date or casting number on the block, here's what I know: F (Flint cast) 0409 (April, 9th engine assembly date) RE is for a 1962, 327, manual transmission, hi performance 340 horse, 4 bbl. for Corvette. The casting date is located on the top, rear portion of the block near the distributor. This will be where you will know the actual casting date of the block and correlation to the assembly date of the engine.

Thank you sir, I don't have the casting date handy, but the VIN number tells me it was a March 63 build date, but VIN on engine pad does not match. So I'm guessing it's possible that this is year correct but not numbers matching motor. Coincidently it does have 340 stickers on the valve covers, and a high HP tach.

The stamped RE characters were used for 62, 63 and 64. They indicate a solid lifter 340 Hp for 62 and 63 and a 365 HP for 64.

Why do you feel it is obviously not the original engine?

The RE suffix was used in 1962, 1963 and 1964 for the solid lifter 327 with 340hp in '62-3 and 365hp for '64.

I will have to get the casting number, but already know that the VIN doesn't match the pad numbers, the pad number is 4115902. Again that doesn't match the cars VIN.

So if it is not a re stamp this is a 365HP engine block out of 1964 #15902

As mentioned above, the RE code is used for 62, 63 and 64. 62 and 63 were 340 HP and 64 was 365 HP. Same RE code though.
