Default Progress!

I parked my 65 about 8 months for a variety of reasons and I'm finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I may be retired but I'm in the midst of remodeling two homes, one of which over 60 miles away so working on the car doesn't get much of a priority.

And once again, the vette was trying to become a bad case of project creep. Initially my problem was with my BG carb, stumbling at low rpm coupled with a tendency to flood becoming more and more frequent. After modifying idle air and idle feed to provide some adjustability, I discovered the stumbling problem was simply a missing cork seal on one the the idle mixture screws! And the flooding turned out to be rust particles from the fuel tank so that's what got it parked.

After dropping the tank, I took advantage of having the mufflers out to swap the old non-functional electric antenna with a simple retractable. And since it was already up in the air, I pulled the half shafts and replaced the U-joints with solid Spicers. At that point I was considering replacing the open 3.70 differential with a posi unit I acquired some months ago but the problem was it needed to be cleaned up, inspected and at the very least, a new front seal. And if I was going to have it down for that long, I was also going to replace the steering box with a Borgeson unit too. I then recognized project creep was getting the best of me and backed off, choosing to only upgrade my rear shocks to adjustables.

Notice I haven't mentioned the fuel tank yet! I had ordered a replacement from Zip but when it arrived, one corner had a bad dent which was interesting because the box was completely undamaged. I took pictures and contacted Zip and they arranged for it to be picked up. After few weeks, I realized I hadn't gotten any shipping notice for a replacement tank and then discovered that the purchase price less shipping had been refunded to my card! I called to find out what the heck was going on a found they had a miscommunication between departments and would get a new tank out immediately. Well not quite immediately, they were going to unbox and inspect it first just to make sure I didn't get another dented one...or worse yet, the same one back since the screwup was that it was tagged as undeliverable and possibly returned to stock.

And while all this was going on, I decided to ditch the BG Demon carb since it was only a 650 that had been perfect on my original L79 but now sat atop a 500+hp 406 SBC and go with a Quick Fuel 750. I got lucky and found a forum member with a nearly new one for sale that now is sitting on my engine waiting for fresh fuel from the new tank.

And that new tank...installed it today! Half shafts went in yesterday, mufflers are back on, a few details left to finish and I'll be turning the key as soon as I can pour fresh gas in the tank.

Here's P.S. Years ago I was into powder coating everything I could and did the half shafts and driveshaft. I was happy to see they looked as good now as they did 15 years ago
