I need to obtain about one more inch of length between the steering wheel and my stomach. I now have a standard column in my coupe and am considering changing to a telescopic column. Does the tele column push further in toward the cluster then the standard column?

Your standard column position can be adjusted. Check out the attached pic and notice the distance between the tapered column collar and the collar at the dash. What is the dimension you currently have on your Vette? Ran across this in one of the service manuals a long time ago. In a nutshell, the entire column has to be loosened including where it attaches to the rag joint. There is a minimum recommended distance between the bottom of the steering mast and the splined shaft coming up from the steering box. Can't recall exactly what the dimension was but I recall it being in the 3/8-1/2 inch range. The idea is you can let the column drop further down and away from you but need to have enough gap to allow the rag joint to work the way it should.

If you have power steering consider a smaller diameter steering wheel. Much less expensive and much less labor.
I ordered a Freeman 15" wheel. In addition to having a smaller diameter it also has about 2 inches less dish. A lot easier and less expensive than a new steering column. INHO
