Default Battery gauge test

Not being an electrician, is there a way to run meaningful tests on the gauge? Of course without it being hooked up and laying on your back under the dash.

Do you want to test to see if it's dead? Or are you testing for accuracy? It's very easy to test to see if the gauge electronics and mechanicals are working. Connect a jumper to the black wire connection and another to the b/w wire connection on the gauge. BRIEFLY, touch the jumpers to a 1.5V battery (AA, AAA). In one direction the gauge should jump full positive, and switch the two jumpers at the small battery and touch again, the gauge should swing full left.
Post back what you are testing for and maybe there are other things to bring into it.

Not being a clairvoyant, what year car would that be for... C1s and C2s vary widely...

I assumed C2 because he said "battery gauge" instead of "ammeter". Wouldn't be my first incorrect assumption though. He had some earlier problems with a 64 hood latch, I believe.

C1 gauges are marked "BATTERY", and as you know, are entirely different than C2 gauges...

Sorry guys. I have a 64 now. I tried it with the AAA battery and nothing happened in either direction. I just ordered one from Ecklers. I was trying to see if the "stuck" needle would move.

Since you've already ordered a gauge you might not be interested but here's how to test the C2 gauges (attached)...also you CAN get this gauge out without pulling the whole cluster but its tedious and requires patience...
