Default What's the correct engine?

When I bought my '66 coupe years ago it had a Chevelle 396 motor in it. I tracked down one of the original owners and he told me the story of how that came to be. Originally he said it was a 427/390. That engine was blown up at the track early on. Next was a '67 427/435 crate motor. That stayed with the car for many years until a dealer bought the car, removed the 427/435 motor and replaced it with the 396. I want to take it back to original. Without any documentation, how do I know it's really supposed to be a 427/390?

Does the car retain any dated original engine parts. Like distubrutor, etc? Does it have the original cluster. The tach redlines are diffreant between the two engines. In short it will ALWAYS be a non original engine car and no one without real GM docs can prove you right or wrong.

PS post the stamp pad of the Chevelle block. Someone might be looking for it

does the car have a rear sway bar, if not, it may never have been a big block car.

It does have the original cluster and the tach redline corresponds to a 427/390. Nothing on the engine is original. The pad on the 396 is smooth; no numbers.

It does have a rear sway bar and the side markings which look original say 427 TurboJet.
