the switch is on the shifter base inside the car. engine heat should not effect it. unless you pink and purple wire connectors behind the dist are no good
Mine is a replacement that I was having problems with since it would not carry the full current required to engage the starter. I solved that problem by mounting an underhood relay, the switch on the shift lever now only operates the solenoid on the relay, which in turn feeds the full current to the starter. Works much better, no problems in several years of operation whereas I was having intermittent problems prior to installing the relay.

Thanks for the reply and suggestion, I will recheck the wiring and maybe do as you have done - thanks again
It's easy enough to bypass the safety switch to check hot starting. Disconnect the switch at the engine electrical harness - there should be two connectors above your wiper motor each having a 12 gauge purple wire to it. Those connectors couple to the safety switch wires. The two connectors couple to each other for manual transmission cars w/ no safety switch. If you still have hot starting problems, you may need a new starter solenoid.
You may already know, but you can always bypass the neutral safety switch by plugging the pink and purple wires together that are mentioned in Nowhere Man's post above. They're there and already plugged together on manual transmission cars. CAREFUL if you do this, the car will start with the shift lever in any position!! Don't forget, but it is a handy method to see if the neutral safety switch is the cause of your problems . . . . .
