One thing I found helpful is to lightly grease the metal-on-metal camming surfaces of the locking ring/gas tank fitting. This area can bind-up a bit during assembly even when using the proper tool.

Repo. seals work perfectly IF they are installed correctly.

JohnZ states - "In the plant, we kept the fat rubber O-ring seals in a tray of motor oil for several hours before installing them; the requirement to do that is in the Assembly Manual, in the "Lubricants" section that decodes the lube symbol on the sheet that shows the installation."
Good to know - too bad they didn't include that in the GM shop manuals for the poor field tech ....
I agree both O-rings can be made to work......maybe there is more than one repro vendor because mine was not sealing; even after 1/2 day in a coffee cup of oil...

Yes..........there is more than one vendor for the gaskets. The best one I have seen recently is made/sold (last few years) by OEM Reproductions, and is now the one sold by many of our parts suppliers. The ring and the cam lock supplied with my Quanta tank 5 years ago were both not very good, and were immediately thrown away.

JohnZ has been instructing us about the o-rings and "the bucket of engine oil" for about 15 years now..........ever since I have been on the forum. But it is good to repeat for all.

What can I say ?

I followed the shop manual procedure using good parts and was successful; as did prob 20 million mechanics over the years...

I think that about covers it...

Powershift,
Did you mean OER reproductions? I'm not finding much under OEM Reproductions.

Thanks, I saw that on ebay. There are a couple like that. It ends up a trust thing because they come in opened bags, or no bag at all.

Thanks again.

O-ring can be verified with a dial calipers or mike.......compare to old........or ask me for the dimensions. GM retainers are more heavy duty than the reproductions. Again, you can compare to the old if you have one. I can give you metal thickness if you need this to verify.

Dr Rebuild site has how to identify this GM o-ring by the embossed logo. Here is the link: https://shop.docrebuild.com/1963-197...825206NOS.aspx

I knew this but could not immediately remember the correct logo without going to the garage. Then I remembered the Dr has it on his webpage.

Enjoy.

First time I have been to the Dr. Rebuild site. What a barrel of laughs!! Better than a morning coffee. I would not want to get on the Dr's bad side.

This will get interesting. I have now seem NOS prices for the O-ring from $3 to $25.

Thanks again, I really appreciate it!
