Default Oil filter bypass valve

I am changing the oil for the first time on the 64 just purchased. This is the original canister type. I pulled the the old gasket out and the two bolts that hold the relief valve appear to be a little too long and don't seat. What should the length of these two bolts be? I want to get it centered correctly before putting the new rubber gasket in. Also, which way should the valve be clocked? In other words, should the little valve that is at an angle be up against the opening on the block? Would it be okay to place a washer under the heads of the bolt to take up the slack? See pic for length of bolt and valve I am talking about.

Yes, this is the part I just took out to clean up. The two bolts holding it in did not appear to be seating, like the bolts were too long. Are these bolts the correct length? I don't want to over tighten and strip the bolt. I just saw on another thread it doesn't make any difference on the orientation of the valve.

The orientation doesn't matter....but the valve should be snug....sometimes when someone has switched to a spin-on oil filter adapter and then go BACK to the canister type oil filter they'll use the bolts that came with the spin-on adapter kit and those are too long......get the correct ones from any of the vendors...or cut the ones you have down a bit...

Paragon catalog says the correct bolts are 1/4-20 threads, 1-1/4 inch long. Grade 5. There catalog headmark for this bolt is a "delta".

The bolt you have pictured is not correct for that unit. If memory serves the bolt is fully threaded (7/16 head). Frankie has a good point regarding the switch over.

Default Bypass Bolts

Put a flat washer and a lock washer on each bolt and you'll be fine.

I cut a little off each bolt and all back together! Thank you all!

That works

You can see why the spin-on filter adapters have longer bolts -- they hold the bypass AND adapter...
