Default door lock ***** 1960

The door lock ***** on my '60 won't stay on. I put the plastic ring on and then the spring clip but it seems the fiber board or Masonite backing is so hard, I cant get the clip to really seat in the lock groove regardless how hard I push. When I do think it's finally on and close the door it flies off. I tried to resolve the problem by grinding off some of the Masonite behind the vinyl with my Dremel hoping it would provide enough give to firmly seat the **** but that didn't work. Anyone have any ideas?

Check and make sure you have the right size clip. There are two sizes, one for the window handles is larger in size than the lock.

second, you should be able to visually see that it will clip the lock **** shaft by looking at it. It is sometimes easy to have it go off kilter and only engage one side of the clip and that won’t do any good. It must engage both sides.

I would take a deep breath and try again...if it doesn’t work, walk away and let your mind think about how you are doing it...your mind will work on the problem even though you are not....give it another hour or two then go back and try again. They are a PIA, so don’t let it get you worked up. You can do this. If need be take some green masking tape to center it in position, put the **** on the shaft and bang it on with heel of your fist. It will go on this way and engage both sides, but you need to be lined up at the start. Also you don’t really need that plastic washer unless you are going for NCRS, easier to put on without.

good luck!

I've used the rubber hammer once or twice....those omega clips can sometimes weaken too - a new set might help...

Also, some Omega clips are round, while some are square. (In addition to being different sizes)

I find that the square ones grab and hold better. Should be able to find them at your FLAPS.. usually in the "HELP" section.

Like these... made from square wire.

Forgot about those - I used them on the 61 and even have some spares somewhere....they do "bite" into the ****'s groove better...

Make sure it seats properly and latches with the door panel off.

As was stated before, two different size clips. I find the reproduction ones (copper in appearance) do not work very well. I had to dig deep in my junk box to come up with a couple originals for the 58. Once I used them, no more issues.............. Go figure, another reproduction part that doesn't fit quite right............
