I have a friend who is looking to buy my 327 and was asking about the Muncie as well. Since I am going with the 5 speed and this is not the original transmission, what do you think would be a fair price to ask?
I just bought one in good condition (got to go for a ride) with a Hurst Comp + shifter for $750. Sold the shifter for &150. I thought it was a good deal but he like you and most others is putting in 5 speed so price on them has gone a bit soft.
2nd gear engagement teeth are trashed. A complete rebuild is in order.
I just rebuilt the Muncie in my 65 Big Block. It looked to be in better shape than yours and this is what I needed to replace.
Unfortunately I agree with Snake and Moxie. That unit is in sad shape. Anyone who knows about trannies won't offer much more than a couple hundred. If they don't you may be able to double that.
You can buy them all day long for $400-$500. The same goes for the Ford Toploader. Most need rebuilds which will run an easy $500.00, so landed cost is around $1,000. They made a trillion of them, so there is plenty of supply.
I have several Muncies that I've rebuilt and they are in top condition, including an M22W with a roller first gear. Also, I have a rare long Muncie for a 64-5 full size Olds-Pont. The demand for good Muncies is somewhat low now. And even though the demand is low, I'm not going to give them away.
I have 4-5 Muncies and one BW T 10 on the shelf. None have been rebuilt. None seem to need it only because you can change gears in them and they don't scratch. Don't pop out of gear and don't leak.
Three cars, two with Muncie and one BW T 10. The T 10 will scratch a little if you get in a hurry but so what?
I wouldn't take less than $6-$800 for any of them. Wouldn't pay $1200 for a rebuilt one and wouldn't trade any of them for a 5 speed OD if I had to use it.
If you show up at my estate sale, you might get a better deal: thumbs:
