Default Show Me Your Luggage Racks

Anyone out there with a luggage rack on their C1/C2? In my never ending quest to have a non original car, I am anticipating installing one on my '57. In 1967, I had one on an earlier '57 that was made for a Triumph TR 3. Just recently, I was able to find the exact same one. When installed, I will be the first official C1 owner to have garnered the most negative points at an NCRS meet.

Since my 1962 (when I take the hardtop off of it) is a dead ringer for that season's "Route 66" TV show car, I had been thinking since I got it a few years ago of adding the luggage rack, vintage luggage and bedrolls that adorned the trunk lid of that car in most episodes. However, the thought of drilling holes in my pristine trunk lid was a tough thing to overcome - so I went the next best way. I found a period luggage rack on-line for a very reasonable $25, added a couple pairs of soft rubber suction cups and some hardware for about another $20, and there you have it. I found out later after carefully scrutinizing some photos of the Route 66 car taken on the set that this was the way they mounted it on the TV show as well - with suction cups. I'm still looking for the "just right" vintage luggage, and then I can display it looking quite accurate. It would be OK to drive with the rack mounted - when it's on there, it's really on there - but I'll probably just throw everything in the trunk and mount it when I get to the show. Hey, it works for me.

Thanks for the pic. That is exactly the TR 3 rack that I have. Good for you--only $20.00. I think I paid around $200+. I will have you do my purchasing from this point forward. Great looking car. My '57 in 1967 was close to that color. Thanks, again, for posting. I like the look of the rack on the car. It does hark back to the Rt 66 show.

Looks good on there - and it's definitely usable. As I said, I just couldn't bring myself to drill into my trunk lid.

I did my own version of route 66 on my way home from L.A. to Ontario in the 70's. Not pretty but really practical. I think I bought it at some dept. store in Burbank for around 25$. Rubber feet and clips that fastened to the trunk lid. No damage or holes.

I would NEVER put one on my 57 or 65 nothing like giving it a station wagon look. The one used on the Rt. 66 series was a strap on type and I never understood why they had one on the C1s they drove since they had a trunk, how much crap do you need to carry on a road trip.
I had one on a 71 I owned and never liked it.

To each their own. Just understand that everyone who doesn't like what you like, or do what you do, isn't wrong. The rack used on the Route 66 TV show did have straps - and I have them for mine - but they really aren't all that necessary unless you're traveling cross-country like Kerrmudgeon. If you look closely at the on-set photo below from the TV series, you can see the white suction cups under the legs of the rack - and as I said, they really stick. They also added four wooden slats to widen the rack a bit - and I may do that to mine, depending on the dimensions of the vintage luggage I end up with. I'm trying to match what you see in the photo as best I can. And lastly, I had a luggage rack on my new 1972 LT-1 roadster and used it all the time. Very handy, especially with no trunk. As I said, to each their own. As my grandfather used to say, "It's good that we all like different things, or every guy in the world would be after your grandmother."
